ENGLISH

1. Speaking and listening

KS1
The performance gives students the opportunity to listen to the story, respond appropriately and then offer feedback to the class on points of interest to them.  They can identify and respond to sound patterns in language such as rhyme and word play used by the characters in the songs during the performance.

KS2
The performance gives students the chance to speak clearly on stage in response to certain parts of the production (for example, when students are chosen to go up and help out on stage).  Students can also evaluate the overall effectiveness of the performance and look at the language variation and dialect forms of the different characters.

Literature
The production helps students to develop an understanding of story structure and different character types. For example, the antagonists –‘baddies’, such as Madam Galore and her side kicks - and the good characters such as The Funky Fitness Crew.

Drama
This show allows students to discuss the versatility of the actors as they portray a variety of characters using different voices and body language. KS2 students can see how light, sound, costumes and set contribute to the overall performance.

PSHE and Citizenship (Personal, Social and Health Education)
The production gives students a chance to discuss what foods they like and dislike while providing an understanding of where their food comes from and how it is grown.  Students will also learn what different foods do for your body (good and bad) with the focus on creating more awareness about the dangers of eating too much junk food and lack of exercise.

The production raises issues such as bullying, the difference between right and wrong, teamwork and friendship.

Physical Education
The performance shows students that keeping fit and healthy can be fun and teaches them the importance of regular exercise.

THE FACTS

The number of overweight and obese children in the UK has risen steadily over the past 20 years. If a child is overweight or obese, it's more likely they will develop serious health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis and certain cancers in later life.

Children who are overweight are more likely to be obese when they grow up and the more overweight you become the greater the risk of health problems.

As well as being a risk to health, being overweight as a child may also cause emotional problems. Teasing about appearance can affect a child's confidence and self-esteem and can lead to isolation and depression.

Eating healthily and maintaining an active lifestyle can also provide children with a greater sense of wellbeing and help with concentration. Reports from schools suggest that that difficult behaviour tends to be rife after the lunch period. Some lunch boxes are being filled with processed food high in sugar, salt, fat and additives. Scientific evidence suggests that a diet like this has a negative effect on behaviour.
