ENGLISH

KS1 & Nursery
The performance gives students the opportunity to listen to the story, respond appropriately, and offer feedback in class on points in the story that interest them. They can also identify and respond to sound patterns in language, such as rhyme and word play, used by the characters in the songs during the performance.

The performance gives students the opportunity to speak clearly on stage when asked to respond to certain parts of the production, when appropriate. For example, when students are asked to sing along with the songs and when they help with the fairy’s spell.

LITERATURE
The production helps to develop an understanding of the structure of a story, and different types of characters within the story - for example, baddies such as the cat and the wolf and the good characters such as Geppetto and the Green Fairy.

DRAMA
The play allows students to discuss the versatility of the actors – for example, when they use different body language and voices to portray a variety of characters.

PSHE & CITIZENSHIP
For both nursery and KS1 the production raises issues such as bullying, the difference between right and wrong, the importance of family, teamwork and friendship.

NUMERACY
Certain parts of the performance focus on numbers, and children have the opportunity to practise their counting skills.

CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT
The show provides opportunities for pupils’ creative development, allowing them to identify different colours. The performance also lets them use their performance skills, allowing them to get up and sing and dance with the actors..

KS1 & Nursery
Sing the songs from the show as a group and perhaps let the children make up their own song all about Pinocchio.

Get the students to create scenes from the story using their bodies. For example, tell them that the top end of the classroom is a magic canvas and they are the magic paints. Get them to tell you their favourite parts from the play and then place them on the canvas to make the picture. Once they have created the picture get them to bring it to life.

Draw a picture of their favourite character from the story.

Ask the children to walk around the room like different characters from the performance. When you say ‘freeze’ they stand still like statues. If they move, then they are out of the game.  Continue until there is a winner.

KS1
Write their own fairy tale and present it in a book, complete with pictures of the different characters.
