The Waste Watchers

ENGLISH

1. Speaking and listening

KS1
The performance gives students the opportunity to listen to the story and respond appropriately and feed back in class certain points in the story which interests them. Also they can identify and respond to sound patterns in language such as rhyme and word play used by the characters in the songs during the performance.

KS2
The performance gives students the opportunity to speak clearly on stage when asked to respond to certain parts of the production when appropriate, for example when students are picked to help the Waste Watchers on stage. Also they can evaluate the overall effectiveness of the performance including language variation and dialect forms for example the Scottish lumberjack and American Metal Mickey.

LITERATURE
The production helps to develop an understanding of the structure of a story, and different types of characters within the story. For example baddies such as Lord Sloppy Rot and the goodies like The Waste Watchers.

DRAMA
Allows students to discuss the versatility of the actors i.e. using different body language and voices to portray a variety of characters. KS2 students can see how light, sound, costumes and set also contribute to the overall performance. PSHE and Citizenship (Personal, social and Health education). For both key stages 1 and 2 the production raises issues such as bullying, the difference between right and wrong, teamwork and friendship. Following the production, KS2 students can research, discuss and debate topical issues and problems such as the importance of recycling and problems caused by landfill sites.

SCIENCE
Both Key stages can investigate further; different materials which can be recycled and what can not be recycled. Students can also investigate why we need trees to survive and what materials are biodegradable and what can be used to compost and why.


ideas for follow-up lessons and activities

KS1 & 2
Build your own Metal Mickey using bits of old rubbish which you would normally throw away. This is a fun way to show students others uses for their old rubbish.

KS1 & 2
Make musical instruments out of old bottles and learn and sing together the 3 R’S and/or the recycling song from the production. KS2 students could even write there own catchy song all about recycling.

KS1 & 2
Make a poster about the 3 R’S and/or recycling.

KS1 & 2
Quiz’s, word search and cross words are a great way of the students remembering different terminology on this subject. Please find worksheets for photocopying at the back of this booklet.

KS2
Get students to look on their local council website and investigate what types of rubbish they take away and what coloured bins they use and make a poster to illustrate their findings.

KS2
Students can investigate further; different materials which can be recycled and what can not be recycled. Students can also investigate why we need trees to survive and what materials are biodegradable and what can be used to compost and why. They can put this together in a newspaper report.

KS2
Students can make up there very own advert illustrating the importance of recycling, how and what we recycle and the 3 R’s. Get them to make it as comical and as memorable as possible with a catchy jingle and slogan at the end.
